About the Virgin Islands
The US Virgin Islands is a small group of islands located near the middle of the Caribbean Archipelo inhabited by more than 200,000 people. The string of Caribbean Islands begins in the east near the Bahamas and stretches southward down to Venezuela. With the warm Caribbean Sea on one side and the cool Atlantic Ocean on the other side, the islands enjoy inviting weather with plenty of sunshine. With beautiful mountainside topography and gorgeous white sand beaches, the US Virgin Islands offer plenty for sun seeking tourists to indulge in. The Island of St John contains the Virgin Islands National Park a natural oasis where migrating and tropical birds, bird watchers and nature lovers all flock to.
The Virgin Islands were once owned by the French, Dutch and British as well, and today the US and the UK share the islands as part of their territories.
The US virgin Islands are composed of the main islands of St Thomas, St Croix, St John, and a number of smaller islands. The British Virgin Islands are only a few miles north of St John creating yet another magnificent view for those visiting St John and St Thomas. St Croix is the largest island in terms of land mass and is much less congested and tranquil than the bustling island of St Thomas.
St Thomas is the commercial center of the Caribbean region and is the main port for cruise ships. When cruise ships dock on St Thomas, the town of Charlotte Amalie is crowded with invading tourists, many of whom are keen on duty free shopping. St Thomas has the majority of top flight hotels although you'll also find hotels on pristine St John and St Croix. There are plenty of condos for rent and on sale on the islands as well.
